Faith, Healing, and Service: Marking the World Day of the Sick February 11, 2026 | Manila Cathedral, Intramuros
On February 11, 2026, the Church turns toward those who suffer, and the Order of Malta turns with it. This year’s observance of the 34th World Day of the Sick brought together patients, healthcare workers, volunteers, clergy, and members of the Order of Malta Philippines at one of the country’s most storied sacred spaces: the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Manila Cathedral.
The occasion honors the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, where pilgrims have sought healing for over a century. It is a fitting anchor for an organization whose 900-year-old mission has never wavered from the care of the sick and the poor.
The morning opened with the Holy Rosary, followed by an audiovisual presentation of the Order’s ongoing hospitaller works, a quiet but powerful reminder that this is not ceremonial charity. These are sustained, year-round commitments to communities that depend on them.
The Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, DD, Archbishop of Manila, with twenty priests concelebrating. In his homily, the Cardinal drew on Our Lady of Lourdes’ apparition to St. Bernadette Soubirous and her message of love, repentance, and forgiveness. He called on everyone present to see Christ in those who suffer, echoing Pope Francis’ exhortation in Dilexit Nos and the timeless parable of the Good Samaritan. After the homily, the sick received the Anointing of the Blessed Oil and prayers for healing.
Food packs were distributed to patients, healthcare workers, and volunteers, a practical act of solidarity that closed the gap between ceremony and service.
Dame Josephine E. Bantug, President of the Order of Malta Philippines, delivered the opening remarks. Her words set the tone for what the day truly represents: not a commemoration, but a recommitment.
The Order of Malta Philippines continues its mission of Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum, the defence of the faith and the service of the poor, through year-round hospitaller and humanitarian programs across the country.
