Order of Malta Conducts Medical Mission for Urban Poor Residents in San Miguel, Manila
The Order of Malta Philippines conducted its 4th medical mission this year at the St. Michael the Archangel Parish in San Miguel, Manila.
A total of 228 parishioners, mostly coming from urban poor communities availed of free medical consultations and medicines. Of that number, 27 availed of Electrocardiography (ECG) tests.
The medical mission was led by three regular volunteer doctors of the Order, namely Dra. Perla Alban, Dr. Lurialdo Pareja, and Dra. Floresita Pareja. They were aided by four nurses from the St. Martin de Porres Charity Hospital and 18 volunteers coming from the parishes of San Agustin and St. Michael the Archangel.
The Philippine Association of the Order of Malta conducted its first medical mission after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo and the Ormoc flashfloods in 1991. Since then, it has organized the same medical services even in non-emergency situations given the institution’s long history of caring for people in need through medical, social and humanitarian work.
