Call for Donations: Relief and Rehabilitation for Typhoon Ompong Victims
The Order of Malta Philippines, in partnership with Malteser International, will be conducting several relief and rehabilitation projects for areas in Cagayan province severely affected by Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut).
Thousands of families, especially Indigenous Peoples (IPs), whose communities were within the direct pathway of a typhoon that had winds reaching 205 km/h. Classified as a Category 5 storm by the United States, it is the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.
Affected residents are in dire need of food supplies and hygiene items. Eventually, the communities will also be in need of shelter materials for the reconstruction of damaged houses.
As of the 22nd of September, the Order of Malta has mobilized two 10-winged trucks containing 1,200 sets of relief goods. Target recipients for this first mission are IP residents of Barangays Annayatan, Awallan and St. Margarita in Baggao, Cagayan. The three are among the 48 Barangays in need of urgent humanitarian need according to the Order’s initial coordination with the local government and the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao.
91% of all 285 houses in Barangay Annayatan were partially damaged including 31 houses that were totally destroyed. Meanwhile, in Barangay Awallan, 64 homes were totally damaged by the typhoon, while 203 of the 635 houses were partially destroyed. Further assessment is needed for St. Margarita, a town only accessible through a 2-day hike or a boatride from Sta. Anna. 114 Aeta families are living in the said town.
