Philippines Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms to ever make landfall in recorded history, left a path of destruction in the Philippines in November 2013. In December 2014, Typhoon Hagupit hit the Visayas region once again with strong rain and winds; this time, the damages were not as extensive as feared.
The disaster preparedness measures taken after Haiyan helped communities avoid the brunt of the storm. All 374 houses which Malteser International had built on the islands of Samar and Bantayan together with Order of Malta Philippines were able to withstand Hagupit unscathed, and also offered several additional families shelter as improvised evacuation shelters. Until May 2015, 326 additional families in need will be able to move into their disaster-resistant homes.
